George Gilchrist, VP Resources, Ivanhoe Mines, shares some insight into the Kamoa Copper Project. George has worked in the mining industry for 19 years. He specialises in understanding the geological controls on mineralisation and building these controls into geological and resource models used in exploration, mining studies and production environments. Key responsibilities include careful monitoring of sampling and QAQC and ensuring industry best practice in grade estimation and public reporting. He has worked for Ivanhoe Mines for the last seven years across their platinum group element, zinc and copper projects, and was heavily involved in the discovery, delineation and modelling of the Kakula Copper Deposit in the DRC. Understandings gained in the modelling process are used to target further exploration. Prior to joining Ivanhoe, George worked for Snowden Consulting, gaining experience in sampling and QAQC, geological modelling, resource estimation, non-linear geostatistics and independent technical reviews and audits. George has lived and worked in both South Africa and Canada, with projects focussed on gold, silver, platinum, copper and nickel deposits across a range of different geological and geographical settings including southern and West Africa, South America, North America and Russia. George began his career in mining with Anglogold Ashanti, working on the deep-level South African gold mines for five years, with responsibilities for mine geology, drilling, logging and geological modelling. George has a keen interest in mentoring and training, having presented numerous Snowden courses whilst working for Snowden, and was responsible for the development of a comprehensive geological training programme for technicians on the Witwatersrand gold mines and Bushveld platinum mines of South Africa. He continues to develop training material and focus on mentoring for Ivanhoe Mines. George studied geology at the University of the Witwatersrand and has supplemented his geology with studies at the Wits Business School and University of Alberta.
