The resort was built by the famous developer Steve Wynn, and is currently owned by the MGM Resorts International. At the front of the resort facing the Las Vegas Strip is the artificial volcano that would erupt every night. It is one of the major resort attraction shows with elaborate effects along the Las Vegas Strip that can be shown to spectators for free. The resort was built in 1987 for an initial cost of $565 million and it first opened in 1989. At the time, it was considered the largest hotel in the world with over 3,000 rooms. Staring in 1990, the is was home to the Siegfried & Roy show, which was famous for their combination of magic and wild animals, and it was held in the resort's 1,500 seat showroom.
