Contained in medicinal plants, agricultural crops and animal breeds, genetic resources have been building blocks for many inventions in life sciences. Requiring patent applicants to disclose the origin or source of any genetic resources or associated traditional knowledge their inventions are based on, the Treaty is a step towards curbing “biopiracy”, the misappropriation of these resources.
