(WHAM) — Five people were killed and several others were injured when a tour bus crashed Friday on the New York State Thruway in Genesee County, authorities said. The bus, operated by M & Y Tour Inc. of Staten Island, was returning to New York City from Niagara Falls with 54 people on board — 52 passengers and two drivers — when it crashed at 12:22 p.m., according to New York State Police Major Andre Ray. The driver apparently became distracted, lost control and overcorrected before the bus went into the right shoulder and flipped on the eastbound side of Interstate 90 in Pembroke, Ray said. He did not say how the driver became distracted, adding that the cause remains under investigation. Ray said the passengers ranged in age from 1 to 74. Multiple people were ejected from the bus during the crash, and five people — all adults — were pronounced dead at the scene, Ray said. Many others became entrapped in the wreck and were rescued. Dozens were taken to hospitals. Ray said it didn't appear any other people had life-threatening injuries. Several ambulances and medical helicopters transported people from the crash, which halted traffic on the Thruway in both directions between Exit 48A in Pembroke and Exit 49 at Transit Road in Cheektowaga. Most of the passengers on the bus were of Indian, Chinese and Filipino ethnicity, according to police. Mercy Flight said its three helicopters transported people from the crash site to hospitals in Western New York.
