It’s an authentic Spanish restaurant established in 1893 by Spaniards living in the Philippines as their exclusive venue for recreation & social activities. It later opened its doors to Filipino members to foster Spanish-Filipino ties & soon welcomed guests & other visitors. It’s one of the 3 Casino Español clubhouses in the country with Cebu & Iloilo. Earlier records show that Gov. Gen. Narciso Claveria y Zaldua formalized the foundation of the casino in Manila in 1844, celebrated as the year of its foundation. A new clubhouse was rebuilt in 1951 after the original structure was destroyed during Liberation of Manila in World War II, attended by no less than Pres. Elpidio Quirino & VP Fernando Lopez. It was designed by Arch. Jose Maria Zaragosa using prevalent post-war Filipino-California-Spanish style with arched verandas surrounding an inner courtyard. In 1962, it hosted future King Juan Carlos of Spain & Queen Sofia (who visited again in 2000). The club holds its open-air festivities in its quadrangle, the Patio de Orquidias such as “Dia de Santiago” commemorating the feast of St. James the Apostle, the patron saint of Spain & Galicia. A central architecture feature of the edifice is a cloister lined with the club’s ballroom, the Salon de Rizal & other function rooms. Towards the club’s Fronton of jai alai & pelota games is an austere library, a heritage structure declared by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines in 1993, housing a choice collection of artifacts & journals about Spain. Then, there’s the 50-seat Comedor Cervantes serving traditional Spanish, Filipino & international cuisine. Ornate chandeliers & huge antique decorative plates adorn the high walls, individually crafted & hand-painted bearing the coat-of-arms of each of the provincial districts of Spain. As it is, the everyday allure of the Casino Español is the Comedor Cervantes, a well-appointed dining room with some of the closest to authentic Iberian cuisines in Manila. The adjoining Bar el Quixote is a well-stocked chamber of select Spanish wines & other spirits. Highlights of this gastronomic enclave include the popular, tasty Paella a la Valenciana, a rice dish made of seafood, sausage, chicken & pork; the Arroz a la Marinera, a rice dish made of fish & shellfish; & the Arroz a la Negro, another rice dish made of seafood with squid ink that makes the rice color black. Other all-time favorites are the Callos a la Andaluza, an Andalucian-style ox stripe stew & the Fabada Asturiana, a rich bean stew. The Casino Español de Manila, a sanctuary of time-honored Spanish charm & traditions is located at the heart of Old Manila at No. 855 Teodoro M. Kalaw Street near Taft Avenue, Ermita, Manila. It is open daily from 9 AM to 9 PM. Look around & you won’t miss this Torre de Manila, the controversial “national photobomber” to Rizal Monument, which is just behind the lot previously occupied by the demolished Manila Jai Alai Building & now left the Fronton of the Casino Español de Manila as the only one evoking a rich bygone era. #tragamonedas viejos #casino palace cancun #como ganar en casino maquinas #red rock casino resort and spa
