The interview provides an excellent first-hand account of the origins of Casino Rueda dancing in the 1950s in Cuba. Basically, Cuban teenagers liked watching American swing dancing (what they thought of as "rock & roll" dancing from the 1956 movie "Rock Around the Clock") and modified it for their own purposes. This in-depth interview features Juan Gomez (also known as "El Abuelo"), who was among the earliest Rueda dancers in the 1950s, and his remarks are translated into English by Anara Frank. Mr. Gomez is part of a group called the "Fundadores" (i.e., "Founders"), comprised of dancers who began dancing Rueda in Cuba during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Lots of great historical and cultural information in this interview!
